Service users across on our Low Secure Unit recently took part in an art competition hosted by the Quality Network for Forensic Mental Health Services, as part of their Forensic Winter Celebration.

This year’s theme, “The Path Forward,” invited participants from forensic hospitals, alongside carers, to explore and express their personal journeys through art. The competition welcomed a wide range of creative interpretations, with a particular focus on the different ways people celebrate, reflect, and find meaning during the winter season.

Our service users embraced the opportunity with enthusiasm, producing a variety of thoughtful and inspiring pieces. Each artwork offered a unique perspective – some reflecting hope and progress, others capturing moments of comfort, connection, and personal significance during the colder months.

Engagement in meaningful activities such as this supports key principles of person-centred care. It enables individuals to express their identity, build confidence, and develop a sense of purpose, all of which are important aspects of recovery and wellbeing. Opportunities for creative participation also contribute to positive therapeutic environments, supporting emotional expression and strengthening relationships between service users and staff. This reflects our ongoing commitment to delivering care that is responsive, inclusive, and focused on improving outcomes.

While we were not selected as winners this year, we are incredibly proud of the creativity, effort, and expression demonstrated by everyone who took part. Opportunities like this play an important role in supporting wellbeing, encouraging self-expression, and celebrating the individuality of those we support.
